Preparing for the Start of Watermelon Season

Leger & Son, Inc is gearing up for a bountiful watermelon season, kicking off with Florida watermelons later this month.

The warm temperatures and Florida sunshine have presented perfect growing conditions over the last two months for our plants and harvesting should begin just after Easter in Zolfo Springs, FL.

Leger has 200 acres of watermelon fields in Florida. Over the past few weeks, we have been readying the sheds with pallets and materials to get a jump start on the upcoming season. Will Hinson, Food Safety Manager, will be headed down to Florida on April 22nd to continue the preparations and oversee the harvest. “We are hoping for lots of sun and minimal rainfall here in Georgia to get the best crop” stated Hinson.

While the crop is ready to roll in Florida, Georgia planting only finished last week. The harsh weather over this past weekend was nerve-wracking for our team, especially after the rough weather that led to a tough season last year, but after checking the plants and fields, they are confident the baby watermelons escaped unharmed.

Sustainability and food safety are our top priority. We pride ourselves on quality over quantity and take every effort to ensure the team is prepared for the season ahead. Whether it’s overseeing the harvesting crew or working with the operations crew in the pack-house, no stone is left unturned when it comes to our quality standards.

With a season that typically peaks over July 4th week, we are anxious to get started with the Florida crop and work our way up the East Coast to our other farms in Georgia, South Carolina, Delaware and Indiana. Be sure to look for Leger & Son juicy, sweet and fresh watermelons in a grocery store near you this summer for the best quality and flavor available!
